The Longest March: A U.S. Military Triumph I (Restoration Revealed Episode 33)

The march of the Mormon Battalion is one of the most remarkable journeys in American history—and one of the greatest untold stories of the Restoration. In this episode of Restoration Revealed, Casey Griffiths follows the Battalion's incredible 2,000-mile trek from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California, during the Mexican-American War. Along the way, discover why members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints volunteered to serve the United States Army at one of the most difficult moments in their history, the extraordinary hardships they endured across the Great Plains and the deserts of the Southwest, and how their sacrifice helped pave the way for the settlement of the American West.

Arriving in San Diego after the longest infantry march in U.S. military history, the Mormon Battalion found a city in need. Rather than fighting major battles, these soldiers spent much of their service constructing roads, repairing public buildings, making bricks, providing security, and helping stabilize the growing community. Their efforts left a lasting mark on early San Diego while demonstrating the faith, resilience, and industry that would become hallmarks of the Latter-day Saint pioneer experience.

Join Casey Griffiths as he visits the historic sites connected to the Battalion's remarkable journey, uncovers inspiring stories of courage and sacrifice, and explores how this unlikely military expedition became a defining chapter in both Church history and the history of the American West.
